MESA, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Police say two teenagers have been arrested after two unrelated threats were made towards two Mesa schools on social media.
According to the Mesa Police Department, both threats were made on September 13, with the first being aimed towards Liberty Charter School. Police say a 13-year-old student at the school posted pictures on Instagram showing a weapon and a warning about shooting up the school.
School staff was immediately notified and it was determined the post was made by the female student. The student was interviewed by police and she told officers she made the posts because she was dared to do so by her friends.
The girl's parents were notified and she was charged with interfering with an educational facility. Police say she had no weapons or any reasonable means to obtains weapons.
The second incident happened on the same day at Westwood High School when a student reported seeing a message written on the wall in the boy's restroom saying, "Friday, be ready for a lockdown."
Police say the school resource officer was notified of the message and was later notified of a Snapchat post saying, "I have a surprise for everyone tomorrow."
Police determined the Snapchat post was made by a 14-year-old boy and he admitted to making the post as a joke.
The boy was charged with interfering with an education facility, disorderly conduct, and threatening and intimidating. Police say the boy had no weapons or any reasonable means to obtain them.
