Man armed with knife killed in Phoenix officer-involved shooting
A man armed with a knife was shot to death by Phoenix Police on Sunday morning. FOX 10's Jacob Luthi has the latest on the active investigation.
PHOENIX - Police shot and killed a man they said ran towards officers armed with a knife. Family members reportedly called 911, saying the man was trying to hurt himself.
What we know:
The "critical incident" involving officers happened near 19th Avenue and West Cheryl Drive shortly after 11 a.m. on Sept. 6.
Police said they received a call about a suicidal person in an alley behind some homes. The person was reportedly armed with a knife and appeared to be actively hurting himself.
When officers approached him, they gave him several commands to drop the knife, but the man was non-cooperative. When the man began walking towards officers, a Taser was deployed, but was ineffective. That's when the man began running toward police, and two officers fired shots, striking the man, according to Sgt. John Buchanan with Phoenix PD.
The man died at the scene. His knife was later recovered from the alley.
"I came out this morning around 10 and there were police vehicles," neighbor John Millard said. "Normally a good neighborhood, but I guess things happen."
No officers were injured.
Family Members Speak Out:
The man's aunt told FOX 10 she saw it all unfold, and was the one to call police to try and help her nephew going through a mental health crisis.
"I had called for help because he wasn’t mentally stable. I told them that he was trying to harm himself," Magdalena Mojica, the man's aunt said.
"Trying to harm himself, he was no threat to anybody else," the man's mother, Nancy Marquez said.
Marquez identified the man shot and killed by police as her son, 20-year-old Johnathan Delgado.
"Me calling them is like, I am the one that [expletive] killed him…I should have never called at that point if they were just going to shoot him," Mojica said.
Mojica said she heard three shots, as police fired their weapons when the man ran toward them, before they rushed to provide medical aid.
Family Demands Answers:
Now, the family is questioning whether more could have been done to de-escalate the situation before their loved one was killed.
"Not a bad child. He was such a good kid," his mother said.
"He wasn’t in drugs, he wasn’t an alcoholic," his aunt added. "He wasn’t trying to hurt them. He wasn’t trying to hurt the police."
What's next:
The Department of Public Safety's Major Incident Division is taking over the investigation. Phoenix Police are expected to release additional information later.
