A 2-year-old boy has died after being hit by a vehicle near Hayden Road and Royal Palm Lane. Police say the child was standing on the sidewalk when the car hopped the curb.

"Witnesses on-scene immediately began performing life-saving aid and Scottsdale Fire paramedics transported the patient to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries," stated Sgt. B. Reynolds of the Scottsdale Police Department.

Investigators say the small size SUV was traveling southbound on Hayden. The 28-year-old female driver lost control of the vehicle and drove up onto the sidewalk, striking the child, who was walking with his parents. The adults were not injured and the driver remained at the scene.

"Neither speed nor impairment appear to have been factors in this tragic accident," said Reynolds. "It's a tragedy. The pedestrians were on the sidewalk where they belonged. This sort of thing happened. We don't know how, we don't know why and now a young life is lost."

Gene Forsythe witnessed the tragic crash, saying, "It's devastating. My heart is just, I'm emotional myself." He explains how many people gathered at the site of the crash. "Everybody was just gathered around. There was a lot of emotions going on."

Forsythe was working at his home when he heard the crash happen. "I was working on my pool and I heard the thump like a car crash and then I heard screaming."

No names have been released in this case and it's not known if the driver will face any charges.
