GLENDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - "I hope that other cities say, 'if Glendale figured out how to do this, then maybe we can,'" Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers said.
In response to the Parkland school shooting last month, followed by the Maryland shooting earlier this week, the City of Glendale wants to be more proactive in protecting its students from violence.
"If our kids don't feel safe at school, then learning doesn't happen," Arizona Superintendent of School Instruction Diane Douglas said.
This morning, city leaders put a plan on the table for better security in the Glendale school system. That plan, addresses what they say is an urgent need of more school resource officers.
Currently, there are only four out of the nine high schools in Glendale that have SRO's on campus, but after today's meeting, Glendale Police Chief Rick St. John says starting Monday, that will change.
"I am committed in this new plan to have an SRO on every high school campus in the City of Glendale, this coming Monday," he said. "That's a quick turnaround."
Glendale Mayor Weiers says dipping into the school's budget is a number one priority, and the community cannot wait any longer to take action.
"We don't need kids going to school worried about whether they're safe, and I don't need moms and dads worrying if their kids are safe," he said. "I need them to go to school and be kids and get educated. That's what we need."
