PHOENIX - A woman wanted on a warrant related to a homicide was critically injured Thursday in an officer-involved shooting after pointing a handgun at police during a traffic stop, authorities said.
What we know:
Phoenix Police stopped a vehicle at about 4:30 p.m. near 75th Avenue and Thomas Road on Feb. 5. While a passenger in the car complied with officers’ orders and exited the vehicle, the woman driving reportedly refused to get out.
Police deployed a less-lethal round in an attempt to get her to comply.
"At that time, during that deployment of the less-lethal tool, she did produce a handgun and pointed at one of our officers, and that is when the officer-involved shooting occurred," Phoenix Police Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez said.
Once the scene was secured, officers removed the woman from the vehicle and rendered aid. She was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
No officers were injured during the encounter.
