Will new tariffs impact the seafood industry?

Many industries have questioned the potential impact of new tariffs announced earlier in the week by President Donald Trump. Justin and Travis Maderia, the co-founders of Lobster Boys joined LiveNOW from FOX's Christy Matino with their thoughts.

A new survey reveals that Americans continue to hold specific industries in high regard, with other industries sinking to record lows.

The poll, conducted last month, surveyed more than 1,000 adults living in all 50 states about 25 key business sectors.

Americans’ views of industries

By the numbers:

According to the poll, Americans’ views of business sectors remained historically weak overall, with just farming, computers and restaurants earning majority-positive ratings this year.

The farming and computer industries led Gallup’s annual ratings, with 60% and 59% of Americans, respectively, viewing them "very" or "somewhat" positively. The restaurant industry was the only other sector rated positively by a majority of Americans (52%) this year.

The data also showed there were modest shifts in a number of the industries’ ratings since last year, but three increased significantly — electric and gas utilities (up nine points), oil and gas (up eight points) and the pharmaceutical industry (up eight points).

At the other end of the spectrum, the federal government returned to the position of worst-rated sector. It displaced the pharmaceutical industry, which had occupied the lowest position for the past two years but rebounded with the aforementioned eight-percentage-point increase this year.

Several other industries, including movies, television and radio, and telephones, sunk to record lows. The movie industry’s 31% positive rating and the television and radio industry’s 32% were both the lowest by one point. The telephone industry’s 34% rating matched the low first recorded in 2002.

The average positive rating across all 25 sectors was 38%, essentially unchanged from last year’s 37% average. This marks the fifth consecutive year it has averaged under 40%. The record-low average rating was 34% in 2008, while the record high was 49% in 2017.

Positive ratings of US business sectors and industries

Industries viewed more positively by party

Big picture view:

Historically, several industries have frequently been viewed more positively by one party than the other. The farming and agriculture and the oil and gas industries have usually been viewed more positively by Republicans and Republican leaners than by Democrats and Democratic leaners. Conversely, the movie industry has mostly received higher ratings from Democrats than Republicans.

The largest partisan gaps in the current ratings included these industries. Republicans rated several sectors; oil and gas (34 points), farming (23 points), automobile (21 points), and retail (17 points), much higher than Democrats did. Meanwhile, Democrats’ positive ratings of the legal field and movie industry each eclipsed Republicans’ by 13 points.
