Convicted felon accused of pulling gun on another driver in Mesa road rage incident
Brain Lopez is accused of pointing a gun with a laser on a victim while they were exiting the 60 in Mesa on Sept. 21.
MESA, Ariz. - A man was arrested following a reported road-rage incident on Sunday night along an East Valley freeway.
What we know:
According to Mesa Police, a caller reported that someone in another other vehicle pointed a gun at them just before 8 p.m. along the U.S. 60.
"Officers contacted the victim, who reported that while exiting U.S. 60 at Stapley Road, a white BMW cut him off," police said. "The victim and the suspect exchanged words at a stoplight, during which the suspect pulled out a handgun equipped with a green laser and pointed it at the victim before driving away."
Investigators say they obtained video footage showing the BMW, which was spotted reentering the freeway at Gilbert Road. During a traffic stop, the driver of the BMW, 22-year-old Brian Lopez, and three other passengers inside the BMW were detained.
"During the investigation, officers recovered a handgun with a green laser inside the vehicle," police said. "Further checks revealed Lopez is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing firearms."
Lopez was arrested and booked into jail. He's accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a prohibited possessor.
What we don't know:
The identities of passengers weren't released. Police did not say if any of them will face charges.
