A running back from William Jewell College died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency while on the sideline of the team’s season opener.

Big picture view:

Micah Jo Barnett had scored the game’s only touchdown late in the first quarter of the Cardinals’ game against Fort Lewis College, an NCAA statement explained. It was during that same first quarter that he experienced the emergency.

Neither its statement nor the tribute posted by William Jewell College provided any other details about what led to the medical situation.

What they're saying:

"William Jewell College and the Liberty, Missouri community mourn the passing of Micah Jo Barnett, a junior business administration and member of Jewell Cardinal football program and former Liberty North Eagle," the Jewell College statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Micah Jo's family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss."

What's next:

A vigil will be held at Jewell College on Saturday night to honor Barnett and his family.

The school has also encouraged students and staff to reach out to its Counseling Services department or Chaplain’s Office for support.

The backstory:

Born in nearby Shawnee, Kansas, Barnett helped propel his high school to a state championship in his senior year before going on to play at Jewell, according to FOX4. The Kansas City station added that Barnett, who was majoring in business administration, played in eight games as a freshman at Jewell and five more the next season, before an injury ended his season.

William Jewell College is located in a northeastern suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. The college has approximately 700 undergraduate students and 1,100 graduate students, according to its website.
