PHOENIX - A suspect who allegedly confronted officers with a knife in a south Phoenix neighborhood on Thursday has died.
What we know:
The shooting happened on Oct. 2 near 7th Street and Southern Avenue.
According to police, officers responded just before 8 a.m. to reports of an attempted suicide at a home in the area.
"Details on the call indicated that a man was inside the home making suicidal statements while being in possession of a knife," Phoenix Police Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez said. "The man also indicated that he would confront officers if they came to the home."
After the officers arrived at the scene, the suspect came outside and ran toward an officer.
"While running, the man was verbally challenging the officer with a knife in hand and raised above his head," Sgt. Fernandez said. "This is when the officer involved shooting occurred."
The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition where he later died. He was identified as 58-year-old Victor Altamirano.
No officers were hurt.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety's Major Incident Division will investigate the shooting.
