AZ dad arrested after shooting injures toddler

The father of a two-year-old who was accidentally shot at a Phoenix home near 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road overnight is under arrest.

A toddler is expected to survive after being shot late Wednesday night at a home in west Phoenix.

What we know:

The shooting happened at around 10:40 p.m. on July 9 near 83rd Avenue and Camelback Road.

Phoenix Police say officers responded to the scene and found a toddler with a gunshot wound. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The child wasn't identified.

Dig deeper:

Investigators say the child's father left his gun out in the open. The child then found the gun and accidentally shot themselves.

"The family at the home was interviewed at which time it was learned that the father of the toddler, identified as 27-year-old Oscar Guerra, left the gun out and accessible to the victim prior to the accidental shooting," Sgt. Rob Scherer said.

Guerra was arrested and booked into jail. He's accused of child abuse.

What's next:

Police say the Department of Child Safety is conducting a separate investigation into the incident.
