Breaking: Trump raises global tariffs to 15%

Just in: President Trump is now announcing a new increase in global tariffs. The President took to Truth Social to announce that the 10% tariff increase will now be raised to 15%. This comes as the Supreme court blocked his tariff authority on Friday.

A defiant President Donald Trump now says he’s raising the global tariff rate from 10% to 15% after the Supreme Court ruled that most of his tariffs are invalid.

Trump, who decried the high court ruling, has vowed to find a way around what he calls a "deeply disappointing" decision from the high court. Here’s the latest:

Trump says tariffs going up to 15%

The backstory:

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 Friday that Trump’s attempt to use the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to enact the taxes is not valid. That power belongs to Congress, the justices said.

What they're saying:

Trump blasted the justices for their ruling in a lengthy press conference Friday afternoon, saying he was "ashamed" of some of them.

"I’m allowed to destroy the country, but I’m not allowed to charge them a little fee," Trump said.

Later Friday, in a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said he signed an executive order replacing the IEEPA tariffs with a 10% tax on imports from around the world. On Saturday morning, he posted an update saying he had raised the rate from 10% to 15%.

"During the next short number of months, the Trump Administration will determine and issue the new and legally permissible Tariffs, which will continue our extraordinarily successful process of Making America Great Again - GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE!!!" Trump wrote on Truth Social Saturday.

What's next:

Under the order Trump signed Friday night, the 10% tariff was scheduled to take effect on Feb. 24. The White House did not immediately respond to a message asking when the president would sign an updated order. The new tariffs come under a law that restricts them to 150 days.

In addition to the temporary 15% tariffs, the president said Friday that he's also pursuing tariffs through other sections of federal law that require an investigation by the Commerce Department.

Will the tariffs be refunded?

By the numbers:

Trade experts say the $133 billion raised from Trump’s tariffs is substantial, and companies are already lining up for refunds.

Dig deeper:

It’s still unclear what the tariff refund process will look like, or whether importers will have to sue the federal government to get their money back. Trump said Friday that "I guess it has to get litigated for the next two years."

Consumers shouldn’t get their hopes up for a refund: Experts say any refunds issued are more likely to go to the companies that paid the import taxes.
