1 dead, 1 injured in downtown Phoenix double shooting

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -"I literally am shaken up because I bike every morning," Benjamin Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez usually starts his workout at 4:30 a.m.. His routine was interrupted today as police tape blocked off his normal route.

"This is, this is something crazy," he said. "I am kind of shaken up to be honest with you."

Phoenix police say at 3:35 a.m., firefighters who were responding to a call at a restaurant near Fourth Avenue and Roosevelt heard gun shots from a block away.

"They went to the scene, they found two individuals who had been shot," Sgt. Tommy Thompson said. "Those firefighters administered first aid and the victims were transported to local hospitals."

Despite their best efforts, one man died, and the other is in extremely critical condition.

As the sun rose, investigators collected evidence and spoke to witnesses who said they saw a white SUV, possible a Dodge Durango, head south down the alley.

"I am very concerned," one witness said. "I live in the alleyway, so it's really concerning and I've never heard or seen anything. I didn't hear anything last night either."

Area residents, including Gutierrez, describe their neighborhood where this crime took place as usually safe and are hopeful it's solved soon.

"Everybody has respect for each other, like for the most part, you see here, there's no trash, everybody greets each other, it's a safe place," Gutierrez said.

If you have any information, you're asked to call Phoenix police or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
