Former FBI Director James Comey has been subpoenaed by the Department of Justice for his involvement in the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) on Russian election interference, FOX News reported citing a source.

FOX News reported that their sources at the time said the investigations were evaluating possible wrongdoing connected to the creation of the 2017 assessment and possible false statements to Congress.

The news outlet also noted that the 2017 ICA concluded that Russia sought to influence the 2016 election, but a later review found the process was rushed and included "procedural anomalies."

Meanwhile, a source briefed on the matter confirmed to FOX News that the subpoena was also connected to an ongoing probe into former CIA Director John Brennan

Investigation into Russia election interference

The backstory:

James Comey supervised ‌a probe into whether Russia and Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russia. As president, Trump fired Comey in 2017, and it led to then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Mueller's investigation eventually concluded there was no evidence of a criminal conspiracy between Trump's presidential campaign and Russia in the election.

Trump for years criticized both a finding by U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia preferred him over Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and the criminal investigation that tried to determine whether his campaign had conspired with Moscow to sway the outcome of that race.

Previously, Comey was prosecuted by the Trump administration after he was accused of lying to Congress, but the case was dismissed after a judge determined the prosecutor who brought it was unlawfully appointed, USA Today reported.

In the past year, the Department of Justice has launched several prosecutions after Trump openly mandated that specific opponents of his be charged, which included Comey.

Also, last year, a judge dismissed indictments against Comey and New York state Attorney General Letitia James, who each previously led probes into Trump.

Meanwhile, in 2025, the Department of Justice fired Comey’s daughter, Maurene Comey, who was a prosecutor in the federal cases against Sean "Diddy" Combs and Jeffrey Epstein.
