Lightning strikes home in Mesa
MESA, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Lightning and storms hit across the valley throughout the night and early this morning.
The lightning in the east valley began at about 2:15 a.m. and lasted for about 45 minutes. During that stretch of time, a Mesa family's odds were stacked against them.
Skyfox captured the damage done to their home after a lightning strike burned a hole in their roof and left dozens of tiles charred and blackened.
The couple didn't want to go on camera, but spoke to us about how loud the noise was when they got hit. They said after the boom, music started playing on the radio and light switches stopped working.
Firefighters say the husband went outside and saw smoke coming from the attic. He then called 9-1-1 and helped his wife get out of the house.
The family's cat and three dogs, also made it out safely.
Firefighters from Mesa, Chandler, Tempe and Gilbert were able to keep the fire contained to the roof and bedroom below it, but the downstairs did have smoke damage.
Crews have already begun boarding the home up and mopping up the mess. The couple is staying with family while the damage to the house is fixed.
The family was told it will take several months to repair the roof.
