PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- The special election on Proposition 105 in Phoenix is right around the corner, and the outcome could stop light rail expansion in its tracks.
Business owners are generally for prop 105, but the Phoenix mayor and many downtown workers are against it. Local shops and restaurants say the construction will be bad for business, but the mayor says it would eventually boost the economy and spur new development.
In about a month Phoenix residents will be casting a major vote. Those who plan to vote yes on prop 105 are in favor of halting the construction of new light rail tracks and routes. Currently, there are plans to build new tracks on a stretch of Central Avenue in downtown.
"Really it hurts businesses right down the central corridor I don't think enough thought was put into how the construction is going to be laid out," said Ant Juan Jones, Lo-Lo's Chicken and Waffles Manager.
The manager of Lo-Lo's Chicken and Waffles wants prop 104 to pass. He's concerned that the long duration of construction will limit access to the restaurant.
"If our customers can't get to us we're hurting them and hurting our economy," said Jones.
But Phoenix Mayor, Kate Gallego, sees light rail boosting our economy in the future and plans to vote no on prop 105.
"It really is something we need to have a leading global city, we need to have options things like light rail systems and airports do require investment, but they pay off," said Mayor Gallego.
She, and others who work downtown believe the city's light rail system should expand with the population.
"I think they should expand, I think it's pretty resourceful I know phoenix is a growing city," said Adam Carranza, Phoenix resident.
"If we want to continue to grow as a city we have to have these amenities available," said Diana Smith, Phoenix resident.
Early voting begins Wednesday, July 31 and election day is August 27.
