1 dead after fiery early morning car collision in Mesa

MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Mesa police say one person is dead following a fiery two-vehicle crash. The incident occurred just before 6 a.m. Monday near Val Vista Drive and Brown Road.

Investigators say one car hit another, sparking a fire.

Authorities say an off-duty officer tried to assist someone in the burning car but the vehicle was too engulfed in flames.

One person in that car was pronounced dead at the scene. A second person was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries. A third received treatment at the scene.

Police say impairment may have been a contributing factor.

No names have been released in this case.
