12 inmates hurt in melee back at Arizona prison

DOUGLAS, Ariz. (AP) - Officials say that a majority of 17 inmates injured in a weekend disturbance have been returned to the southern Arizona prison near the U.S.-Mexico border, where their unit remains on lockdown.

Arizona Corrections Department spokesman Andrew Wilder says 12 of the inmates hurt in the Sunday night melee are back at the medium-security Mohave Unit at the state's prison complex in Douglas.

He said Monday that six corrections officers suffered minor injuries quelling the one-hour disturbance and were treated at the prison.

Wilder says residents of the 950-bed unit will initially have their movements restricted and visits will be suspended while investigators try to determine what caused the fighting between two groups. The officials will attempt to identify the instigators and reassign them to other units if deemed necessary.
