Cochise County Jail inmate found dead
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) - A Cochise County Jail inmate was found dead in his cell after apparently hanging himself with a noose made from a sheet.
The Sierra Vista Herald reports detention staff found 32-year-old Reynaldo Amaya, of Douglas, hanging from a vent in his cell Tuesday. Amaya was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.
Amaya was booked into the jail Sunday on domestic violence and harassment charges.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas says jail staff conducts cell checks every 30 minutes. The sheriff's office hasn't said when the last check occurred before Amaya's body was discovered.
According to Arizona Department of Corrections records, Amaya was released from prison in January after serving a 3.5 year sentence for a domestic violence charge and a marijuana violation.
