First-alarm fire destroys home in southwest valley

A first-alarm fire destroyed a family's home in Laveen overnight.

The Phoenix Fire Department says the fire broke out at about 11 p.m. on Monday night at the home near 35th Avenue and Elliot Road.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, there were flames shooting through the roof and as they fought the fire, they quickly went on the defensive as the roof began to collapse.

One of the biggest problems for firefighters was getting water to fight the fire because of only one fire hydrant in the area. Tanker trucks were called to the scene and after some time, firefighters gained control of the fire.

The family who owns the home was out of town and no one was injured.

Phoenix fire says about 50 firefighters were at the scene fighting the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
