Hotel nightmare: Woman recounts interactions with accused killer

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Imagine living next to somebody, passing them in the hall, seeing them at breakfast, saying "hi" to them at the pool, and then imagine finding out they killed six people.

That's exactly what Samantha says happened to her while she was staying at the Extended Stay America hotel next to Dwight Jones.

"The SWAT team woke us up at 4 in the morning with a phone call letting us know that there was something going on and we need to vacate, she said.

It was a hotel nightmare living right next door to a man accused of killing six people in less than a week. Samantha says her last interaction with Dwight Jones was on Friday night, when she suspected Jones, a resident of the hotel for nine years, was swimming with members of the night staff.

"I passed him in the elevator as he was coming through the pool area, I was coming down and the night staff was walking in, joking with him like it was no big deal," she said.

After the commotion on Monday morning, including a standoff with police and Jones ending his own life, Samantha says her heart is absolutely broken for the victims and their loved ones.

"Honestly, it disgusts me and it makes me really sad, really sad for the families that he affected directly," she said. "Not just us, but it really upsets me because there was no reason for any of this to occur the way that it did."

Samantha says the only comfort in a time of chaos was offered by the Valley's first responders.

"I'm just thankful that the Scottsdale and Phoenix Police and Fire Departments handled everything the way they did," she said.
