Man taken into custody after police standoff

A man was arrested following a long standoff with police on Tuesday after detectives tried to serve him a search warrant for his arrest.

Phoenix police say 31-year-old Evert Velasquez was arrested after he refused to surrender to detectives and barricaded himself in an apartment near 4300 N. 20th Street.

When detectives arrived at the scene to arrest him on a warrant of suspected sexual conduct with a minor, Velasquez threatened to harm himself.

Police then learned that the victim in the case, a 14-year-old teen, was also inside the apartment.

After hours of negotiations, the teen exited the apartment and police took Velasquez into custody.

The victim had been reported missing out of Glendale and was turned over to DCS custody.

Velasquez has been charged with four counts of sexual conduct with a minor.
