Man with knives fatally shot by Flagstaff police identified

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (FOX 10) - The Flagstaff Police Department says one of their officers was involved in an officer-involved shooting leaving one person dead.

The incident happened in the parking lot of the Guidance Center on Vickey Street Saturday morning.

Police say two officers were leaving the center on an unrelated call when Henry Harold Russell, 47, of Boise, Idaho, confronted the officers with two knives. As he approached an officer with the knives, the officer backed away and gave commands to drop the knives. Russell charged and the officer fired his weapon, hitting him. No officers were injured.

The officers provided lifesaving measures until medics arrived on scene. Russell was taken to a hospital where he later died. Police have not said whether he was a patient at the mental health facility.

The police officer involved is Tyler Romney, a member of the Flagstaff Police Department for three and a half years.

The Coconino County Sheriff's office and the Arizona Shoot Team are investigating.
