Officer stops wrong-way driver on Phoenix freeway

PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona Department of Public Safety officer stopped a wrong-way driver on a Phoenix freeway early Friday morning.

The wrong-way driver had been traveling westbound on eastbound lanes of the Loop 101 for about 10 minutes before being stopped at about 3 a.m.

According to the DPS, the elderly driver appeared to be disoriented and no charges are expected to be filed.

The Phoenix area has had a number of fatal freeway accidents resulting from wrong-way drivers.

Those killed in collisions with wrong-way drivers have included an off-duty Mesa police officer and a Phoenix Fire Department dispatcher going home from work.
