Police K-9 officer killed in the line of duty on his final shift before scheduled retirement

    • Police in Portland, Oregon say one of their K-9 officers, Kylo, was fatally shot during a shootout with a suspect.
    • K-9 Kylo was shot on what was supposed to be his final shift before retiring after six years of service.
    • The police dog was being mourned as a "true protector of the peace."

An Oregon K-9 officer who was working his last shift before retirement was killed in the line of duty Thursday.

What we know:

The Portland Police Bureau says the shooting happened as their officers and members of the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force were attempting to arrest a suspect in a killing, the agency said in a release. 

The suspect died at the scene of the shooting. 

Authorities rushed K-9 Kylo to an animal hospital for treatment where he died from injuries he suffered in the shooting.

Police described K-9 Kylo as "a true protector of the peace" and asked the community to keep the officers and staff of the Portland Police Bureau in their thoughts. 

"Kylo served the community for six years and today was scheduled to be his last shift," the Portland Police Bureau said in a release. 

The backstory:

Gresham Police said a welfare check early Thursday morning led to the discovery of a body in a home. Investigators said they determined that the victim had been killed and were able to identify a suspect. 

Police said they found the suspect in Portland later in the morning and requested help from the U.S. Marshals task force. The suspect ran from the scene and that led to the shooting, police said.

Investigators said they recovered a firearm at the scene.  

The shooting involved two Portland Police Bureau officers and two officers from other agencies. The Portland Police Bureau officers have been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation into the shooting. 

Authorities had not yet released the name of the victim found at the crime scene or the suspect killed in the shooting with police.
