Police looking for man who attacked woman at park

San Francisco police are looking for a man who attacked a woman near Lafayette Park around 7:45 pm on Saturday. On Friday night, SFPD released a sketch of the suspect.

Surveillance video shows a woman in her 50s, walking on Washington Street between Octavia and Gough Streets, when a man walks up to her and begins punching her in the face.

The woman was struck multiple times, suffered a broken nose and will need surgery.

The victim said she had not spoken to the suspect prior to or during the encounter.

"I believe he asked her to say, 'Say you're sorry,' or something along those lines," said SFPD Officer Giselle Talkoff. "She had absolutely no idea what he was talking about because she did not know him."

During the attack, the suspect tried to pry the victim's hands away from her face, but the woman was able to guard herself.

The suspect is described as white male, possibly homeless, 40-50 years old, brown hair, average build, wearing a dark green zip-up sweatshirt and jeans. Police believe he was high on drugs or alcohol or perhaps mentally ill.

He was last seen fleeing east on Washington Street to South on Gough Street.

Police have been unable to find any witnesses and are asking anyone who may have seen something to come forward.
