Rep. Matt Salmon introduces bill aimed to keep criminal undocumented immigrants behind bars

Arizona Congressman Matt Salmon is introducing a new bill aimed at keeping certain undocumented immigrants in jail.

The proposed measure is called Kate's law, it's named after the woman who was shot and killed in San Francisco by a man who had been previously been deported five times.

The random shooting of Kate Steinle happened on San Francisco's Pier 14. It is now a catalyst for stricter immigration laws.

San Francisco's Sheriff placed blame back on the Federal Government for not deporting the suspected shooter, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez. He'd been deported five times before.

"The common sense move is what we've been stating from the onset, that ICE should have deported him... it's not like they transferred him and forgot about him. They have the same FBI record number that CII and fingerprint system, that gave the complete chronology of what his status was at any given period of time, and ICE could have acted," said Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi

Now Arizona Congressman Matt Salmon's bill would mandate a minimum 5-year sentence for undocumented immigrants who had previously been deported.

Matt Salmon issued the following statement: "By instituting mandatory minimums for those who illegally reenter our nation after already having been deported, we help dissuade those who so casually disregard our laws and continue to victimize Americans."

The San Francisco Sheriff said his office was following San Francisco's procedures when it released Lopez-Sanchez after he served time for a drug-related offense. As a "sanctuary city" police only turn over people to Federal authorities if there is an active warrant for the suspect.

"I find it incredibly sad, and incomprehensible that this tragedy is being used as a platform for political gain," said Sheriff Mirkarimi.

In Arizona, Chandler, Mesa, and Phoenix are "sancutary cities," with similar policies as San Francisco.
