The backstory:
McConnell, 84, has served in the Senate since 1985 and led the upper chamber from 2015 to 2021. Despite no longer being the Majority Leader, he still serves as chair of the powerful Senate Rules Committee.
McConnell, whose term is expiring, previously stated that he was not running for reelection.
