Valley docs see increase in concern over Zika virus
At New Horizon's Women's Care in Gilbert, part of Arizona OBGYN affiliates, not one but two doctors are pregnant. Dr. Judie Adams is seven months pregnant, and shows how she does examinations on Dr. Theresa Chu who is nine months pregnant.
The Zika Virus is very much on the minds of women coming here.
"I am starting to get more patients asking about it, hearing on the news and reading online, and are worried how it might affect them," said Dr. Adams.
Dr. Adams has studied the latest information from the CDC, she tells her patients to take the virus seriously.
"My thoughts are any time a woman is expecting, and you hear about complications it is of course scary, and you need to find out as much as you can as soon as you can about the information," said Dr. Adams.
Her advice, if you're pregnant do not go to Central or South America where the virus has spread widely.
Dr. Adams is paying close attention to reports that the virus may be transmitted not just by mosquitoes but sexually, and also that in Brazil researchers have found the virus in urine and saliva samples.
"As far as I know they do not know much about it yet, but if that becomes better known, and not just through insect bites, that would be much more worrisome for the future," said Adams.
The CDC says anyone going to Central and South America it's a good idea to stay away from mosquito-infested areas and to use insect repellent.
