Why did pack a of dogs run onto a Phoenix freeway?

PHOENIX (FOX 10) - There are thousands of answers to age age-old question, "Why did the chicken cross the road?"

But yesterday, when the question was "Why are six dogs crossing the freeway?" There was one clear reason.

"There is a little female German Shepard, we believe she is in heat," said Jose Miguel Santiago with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control. "At this point, five of the males were chasing after her, trying to actually get to know her in a more familiar way."

Around 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning, the dogs were spotted on I-17 near Thomas Road. The pack made up of different breeds of all shapes and sizes captured the Valley's attention.

Even ADOT found humor in the situation tweeting, "A pack of dogs are roaming I-17 at Grand. No this is not a joke."

Thankfully, DPS and MCACC were able to safely wrangle the bunch. Two returned home on their own and one was claimed by his owner.

"The fact that DPS was able to control the cars, nobody got out of their car and got hurt, all the dogs made it off safely," Santiago said.

The German Shepherd and the other two males are still at MCACC.

"Once the 72 hours is up, we'll evaluate them and determine if they'll go up for adoption," Santiago said.

Thankfully, this doggie tale has a happy ending.

"We're totally thrilled with how it all went and all ended up and hopefully all these guys make it home for the holidays," Santiago said.
