1-year-old girl dead, mother arrested in drowning incident

PEORIA, Ariz. (KSAZ) - A 1-year-old girl has died after being found unresponsive at a Peoria apartment complex overnight.

The Peoria Police Department says the girl's mother has been arrested and charged with two counts of child abuse.

"Because it is a situation where you have a child who is in critical condition, we want to take all the steps we can to be very careful of how we conduct our investigation," Lt. Stephen Hadley said.

The mother who has not been identified called 9-1-1 and said the child was not breathing. When officers arrived the baby was wet.

There was also a 3-year-old inside the home as well, that child was not injured.
