Community rallies together after Valley man shot, killed over cell phone
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A community is rallying together just three days after a man was shot and killed over a cell phone.
The family of 34-year-old Eric Hernandez is preparing for his funeral and have been fundraising nonstop.
Dozens of drivers stopped at the Go Insurance parking lot to donate to the funeral fund for Hernandez.
"I didn't know my dad had this many friends," said his son, Eric Hernandez Jr. "I didn't know he was loved that much."
Eric Jr. lost his father Wednesday night when Hernandez was shot by a suspect who ran off with his cell phone, police say.
"I just hope that Eric can go to heaven because he's loved," said Evonne Moreno, the mother of his children. "He's going to have a beautiful funeral."
Family and friends collected donations and sold raffle tickets for several hours to make sure they have enough to properly lay Hernandez to rest. Most of all - they want the shooter arrested.
The shooting suspect is still unknown.
