Coyotes CEO says the team wants to stay in Arizona

PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- The first Phoenix Suns public meeting on their proposed arena deal with the city is coming up on Saturday, but forgotten in all the arena talk around the Valley is the status of the Arizona Coyotes.

On Monday, the team offered one big clue.

"Yeah, I think the NHL here in Arizona is a great thing. I think hockey in the desert is a great thing," said Brad Zehring.

With all the speculation regarding the Diamondbacks and Suns wanting new arenas, the Coyotes have been left out of the conversation, with the assumption that the hockey franchise would skate out of the Valley. That's no longer the case.

For the first time, the NHL team made it clear that their plan is to stay in the Phoenix area in 2019 and beyond. In a letter addressed to fans, team president and CEO Ahron Cohen says "Arizona is our home. We love it here."

"I think it's important that Phoenix, as a city where it's grown so much, that we have representation with all the different teams," said Jennifer Dominguez. "I think it's important for a growing city to have that."

"While the letter is certainly comforting to Coyotes fans, there are some issues that still need to be settled, such as where the team will actually play next year. The end of the season is the end of the road for Glendale. The team could re-up there, or could the Coyotes end up playing back at Talking Stick Resort Arena?

"When the Coyotes were in Downtown Phoenix, I went to a lot more games than when they were in Glendale," said Zehring. "Easier to get out there on weeknights, easy on the weekends too."

The other lingering question: would an ownership change push the Coyotes out of town?

Cohen addresses that directly, saying that any investors must be "laser-focused on helping the Coyotes achieve a long-term, sustainable arena solution here in Arizona."
