Crash involving Mesa police vehicle closes US 60 at Loop 101

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A serious crash involving a Mesa Police Department transport vehicle has closed westbound US 60 at Loop 101.

There were 15 inmates inside the van which collided with a flatbed truck.

Firefighters had to cut the driver out of the vehicle. A total of 16 people were taken to various hospitals, six had serious injuries, and 10 had injuries that were described as minor to moderate.

The Arizona Department of Transportation directed drivers to exit at Alma School to avoid the closure while officers investigated.

The Mesa Fire Department says there are no life-threatening injuries at the scene.

DPS troopers are investigating.
