What happened?

The backstory:

Officers were called to the home of Spencer and Monique Tepe the morning of Dec. 30 for a welfare check requested by concerned friends and co-workers.

Police said they found Spencer, 37, and Monique, 39, both dead with gunshot wounds. Spencer had been shot multiple times. The couple’s two young children were home and unharmed when officers arrived.

According to police records, an officer first arrived at the home around 9:20 a.m., but left after no one answered the door. About 40 minutes later, another friend called to say he was at the Tepes’ home and could hear children inside. At 10:05 a.m., another friend called police and said he could see Spencer’s body inside next to the bed.

Detectives believe the murders took place between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.

‘Tragic and senseless’

Spencer Tepe was a dentist at the Athens Dental Depot. The couple was killed just one month short of their five-year wedding anniversary, Rob Misleh, Spencer's brother-in-law, told WSYX.

What they're saying:

The couple's family said in a statement they are "heartbroken beyond words," and called the deaths "tragic and senseless."

"They were extraordinary people whose lives were filled with love, joy, and deep connection to others," the statement reads. "Spencer, a graduate of The Ohio State University, was known as a devoted and proud father, a loving partner, and a friend to everyone he met … intelligent, warm, and endlessly welcoming."
