Family of Chandler couple who died in bridge crash speaks out

Jacob Contreras read a statement written by the three daughters of AnnaMarie and Cruz, who died over the weekend when a truck flipped over a bridge and plunged 60 feet at a motorcycle gathering in San Diego.

"Everything seems like a horrible nightmare that we cannot wake up from," he said. "We love our mom and dad very much and we want to share the world with who they truly were. Our dad surrounded himself around friends and family. Those were the two most important things to him. She was not just our mom, she was everyone's mom, she was very nurturing."

Jacob says his aunt, AnnaMarie, and uncle Cruz had gone to the motorcycle festival for years.

"The park was one of their favorite places to go to, they loved going there, they loved the community there, they loved the brotherhood of the motorcycle, they really enjoyed going on these runs," he said.

The tragic incident has left the family stunned and has taken away two big advocates for foster children.

"They dedicated their entire life to helping other people, in fact, their jobs were dedicated to helping children, outside of work they also did foster care," Jacob said.

Now, as the couple's three daughters, grandchildren and extended family mourn, they ask the community for one thing:

"A driver took something priceless from us that we can never replace, please don't text and drive," he said. "Because of a text that couldn't wait, we will never have our parents physically on Earth with us."

That driver, a 25-year-old Navy sailor, is facing DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges. He remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
