HOUSTON (FOX 26) - A middle school teacher appeared in court Friday after allegedly having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student.
Former Aldine ISD teacher 24-year-old Alexandria Vera has been ordered to stay away from children under the age of 17, and will also have to wear a GPS ankle monitor.
She faces anywhere from 25 years in prison to life if convicted.
Vera claims that the boy's parents condoned their relationship, which means they could be charged with failure to report child abuse.
Sheriff's spokesman Brady Fitzgerald says Vera posted a $100,000 bond Wednesday and was released from custody.
An Aldine ISD certified peace officer was assigned to follow-up on an investigation concerning the inappropriate relationship between Vera and a student at Stovall Middle School.
Vera admitted to being involved with a well-known student at the school, when approached by the campus principal. The student is said to be in Vera's eighth grade class. School records obtained by the district attorneys state that the student was under the age of 14 when the relationship began.
Vera stated that she first met the student during the summer school session in 2015.The two began communicating via social media on Instagram after the summer school session ended.
Vera says that the student would flirt with her and say inappropriate things to her, to which she would tell him to stop. She stated that in September, she noticed that he was not in class and became worried about him. She said she sent him a message on Instagram to check on him and remind him of an assignment due. Vera said that he replied and this led to him asking for her phone number.
Vera says she told the student that the two could hang out. She allegedly picked the student up, and the two drove around and kissed in the car.
The following day, Vera came by the student's house again, this time his parents were not home. According to police documents, Vera says this was the first time the two had sex in September of 2015.
The following October, Vera stated that the school held an open house and this was the first time she met the student's parents. Following the open house, Vera went back to the student's home and was introduced to the student's parents as the boy's girlfriend. According to reports, the parents were accepting of the relationship and that Vera was invited to family gatherings.
Vera said that the two continued to have sex, and spend more time together. According to documents, Vera got pregnant by the student in January. Police say that Vera said that the student's family was very supportive and excited about the pregnancy. She said that she ended up having an abortion, after she got nervous when CPS unexpectedly showed up at school in February of 2016 to question her and the student about their relationship. She said that she denied the pregnancy and the relationship at that time to CPS, and provided her cell phone and consented to a digital search.
In the search, police found messages between Vera and the student that were consistent with what Vera disclosed.
Aldine ISD released the following statement:
Vera has been charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child, a felony.
