Man critically injured in chain-reaction crash on I-10

A man is in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle when getting out of his car following a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 10.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says at 5:40 a.m. on Friday, a four vehicles and a motorcycle where involved in the crash that closed eastbound I-10 at 40th Street for several hours.

A man was thrown from his motorcycle after the brakes failed and multiple vehicles swerved to avoid hitting the man and motorcycle. Three vehicles then stopped and they were rear-ended by a dump truck.

One of the drivers of the stopped vehicles got out of his car and was hit by one of the vehicles that were rear-ended by the dump truck. The man was unresponsive when troopers arrived at the scene and he was taken to a hospital where he remains in serious condition.

No one else was injured and the freeway was shut down for several hours during the morning commute.
