Navy veteran biking 3,000 miles cross-country to raise money for military members and vets

She may no longer be an active duty member of the Navy, but Tracy Sefcik continues to support veterans and those still active in the military.

Sefcik is on a 3,000 mile mission. She's biking from San Diego, California to St. Augustine, Florida to raise money for the Gary Sinise Foundation.

"Help my fellow veterans in time of need. Just kind of show my support and thank them for what they are doing and trying to help them out as much as possible," Sefcik said.

She embarked on this journey on March 2, along with a biking partner. They took off from the flight deck of the USS Midway, a place that brings back memories of when she was in the Navy back in the 80's.

"It was very emotional when I first started to go up the brow of the midway. I did get teary-eyed. It brought back a lot of emotions of when I first started my Navy career and started this journey," Sefcik said.

Sefcik is now a week in and has arrived in Phoenix. But she says her trip to the valley was a bit challenging.

"We hit going up the mountains in San Diego, freezing weather with rain and the coming out of the Imperial Valley, 23 to 25 mph winds," Sefcik said.

Sefcik will now tackle the rest of the journey as a solo cyclist. She plans to arrive to St. Augustine by May 3.

So far, Sefcik has raised over $22,000, and her goal is to get to $25,000.
