Officials say one dead following shooting at Maryland high school

BELTSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A man shot and killed a woman who was waiting to pick up her children in the parking lot of a suburban Washington high school Thursday and wounded a man who tried to intervene, police said.

Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski III said at a news conference that the shooting was domestic in nature and that the gunman and the woman he killed had a prior relationship. The bystander was wounded in the shoulder and was expected to survive.

No students were harmed in the shooting, which occurred more than an hour after school was dismissed for the day, county Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said. Some students were on campus for after-school activities and were held there until police said they could be released to their parents.

The shooting was captured on school security cameras, and Stawinski said police believe they have identified the gunman, but the suspect's name was not immediately released. He drove away from the school after the shooting and police were searching for him, Stawinski said.

"This was a sad, sad event," Stawinski said.

The chief said the gunman got into an argument with the woman and that another man tried to intervene. The gunman turned and fired multiple shots, hitting the other man in the shoulder, Stawinski said. He then turned and shot the woman several times, Stawinski said.
