Police investigate fatal officer-involved shooting in Gilbert

Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the area of Recker and Guadalupe.

According to authorities, officers were called to a home around 8:00 p.m. Monday about a man who was not feeling well and was acting erratically. Sgt. Darrell Krueger says officers spent close to 20 minutes trying to de-escalate the man's behavior and get him some assistance.

"The male, identified as Joshua Kinnard (37 years old), refused aid and the officers exited the home to continue talking to another resident in front of the house. It was during this conversation in front of the home that Kinnard accessed a weapon and threatened officers. The officers feared for their lives and shot Kinnard," stated Krueger.

Officials say despite life-saving efforts by the officers, Kinnard was pronounced dead by Gilbert Fire Department crews.

No officers were injured in this case.

According to officials with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Kinnard was a detention officer assigned to Inmate Medical Services, and was on approved medical leave at the time of the incident. Kinnardwas a six-year veteran of MCSO.
