According to Sgt. Mercedes Fortune with Phoenix police, officers responded to reports of a man and woman arguing and shots being fired near a vehicle at 1 a.m. near Interstate 17 and Indian School Road.
Officers in the area heard the gunshots and located the vehicle leaving the area near 27th Avenue and Glenrosa. The vehicle failed to stop for police and collided with another vehicle at the intersection of 35th Avenue and McDowell Road.
After the collision, the vehicle continued south on 35th Avenue before the driver lost control while turning onto Washington Street. After the vehicle stopped, a woman in the passenger seat ran from the vehicle yelling for help.
The driver, who was armed with a rifle, got out of the vehicle and opened fire on police. One officer returned fire, striking the suspect.
As the suspect was being taken into custody, police say he was not cooperating and an officer fired stun bag rounds at him.
The 21-year-old suspect was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
The woman who ran from the suspect's vehicle was not injured.
