Teen dies after being struck by vehicle in Phoenix
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A valley teen has died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a street on Monday night.
Phoenix police say the 13-year-old girl was crossing 19th Avenue at Utopia when she was struck by a vehicle that was traveling southbound at 8:30 p.m.
According to witnesses at the scene, the teen was looking down while crossing the street and disregarded the "don't walk" signal on the traffic light.
The 19-year-old driver of the vehicle locked up his brakes and skidded several feet before hitting the teen, who did not react to the incoming vehicle.
The teen was transported to a local hospital where she later died.
The driver stayed at the scene after the collision and there were no indications of impairment.
Speed was also not a factor in the collision and the driver was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
