MONSOON WATCH: Dust storm battered parts of the Valley

A dust storm is battering parts of the East Valley Thursday evening.

SkyFOX has captured a wall of dust moving on parts of the East Valley. Meanwhile, ADOT cameras are also showing very reduced visibility on stretches of the I-10.

SRP officials, as of 5:50 p.m., reported eight power outages in parts of the Valley. One of them, affecting an estimated 102 customers in an area spanning N. 80th Street and N. 88th Street, and E. University Drive and E. Pueblo Avenue, was blamed on storm activity.

Another one, affecting 19 customers in an area spanning 60th to 64th Streets and E. Indian School and E. Thomas Roads, was blamed on downed power lines. Other SRP power outages affected parts of Phoenix, Ahwatukee, Gilbert, and Chandler.

APS officials also reported a number of power outages in the Phoenix area, ranging from near Downtown Phoenix to south of the New River area.

Meanwhile, ADOT officials said State Route 347 was closed south of Riggs, due to low visibility from blowing dust. For a time, Interstate 10 was shut down, in both directions, at Milepost 219 near Picacho. It has since been reopened.

This latest monsoon storm comes, seven years to the day of a haboob that hit the Valley, which garnered national and global attention.
