First-gen AZ college student earns $5M in aid
An Arizona student received around $5 million worth of scholarships to universities and colleges around the country. In the end, he decided to attend ASU. FOX 10's Irene Snyder has the story.
PHOENIX - An Arizona student was offered $5 million in scholarships to dozens of colleges and universities. ASU turned out to be the right fit for him.
What they're saying:
"I got motivation from friends and everyone around me, so I started applying," Joseph Parra Miguel said.
Joseph Parra Miguel just started his freshman year at ASU.
"I feel excited. I was happy because so many people want myself, as a person, to go there and explore more options and do stuff in their communities," Parra Miguel said.
He recently made headlines for being granted more than $5 million in scholarships from dozens of universities.
"There were some ways. I applied one way was Common app, see activities you've done, and then the other one, Niche, where you make another profile and apply to college and review your whole application process, and they'll tell you in a few weeks if you got accepted or not," Parra Miguel said.
And then, the acceptance letters just started pouring in.
"I saw some of the emails because those were faster than the mail, come a week or two later, and when I keep seeing them and logging into credentials. I see the amount of scholarships, and I was surprised so many colleges and universities that want me to go to their specific place," Parra Miguel said.
In the end, he decided on ASU.
"I chose ASU because it's close to home and the majority of majors tailor to the one I want to do here, which is business language and culture, and I want to immerse myself into those communities and help them," Parra Miguel said.
Big picture view:
As a first-generation college student, Parra Miguel's parents moved from Mexico to live here in Arizona. His family continues to inspire him each and every day.
"What motivates me learning more about my own culture and background before I didn't like my own background as a kid and I started to feel more proud of it, and it helped me understand more of who I am and what I want to do in the future to help others," Parra Miguel said.
