DNA ties inmate to 1993 cold case of Mesa woman's death

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - An Arizona inmate is being named as the suspected killer of a Mesa woman whose bullet-riddled body was found in an apartment fire more than 20 years ago.

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery announced Wednesday that 62-year-old Raymond H. Hanley has been indicted in the death of Debra Shipton.

He faces charges of first-degree murder, burglary, kidnapping and arson of an occupied structure.

Hanley, who is serving a 30-year sentence for a 1994 conviction for kidnapping and sexual assault, could get life in prison.

Montgomery says Mesa police linked Hanley to the scene through DNA evidence.

Mesa firefighters responding to the 1993 fire found Shipton's body in a master bedroom.

Police say her hands and feet were bound and she had been shot in the back six times.
