DPS Director: Suspect in deadly DPS trooper shooting on medication for anxiety, depression

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- Col. Frank Milstead, Director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, has identified the man arrested in connection with the deadly shooting of a DPS Trooper late Wednesday night.

In a news conference on the deadly shooting Thursday afternoon, Col. Milstead identified the suspect as 20-year-old Isaac D. King. King has been taken into custody.

Milstead said DPS first received a call of a suspect throwing object at cars, at around 10:17 p.m. The King and troopers on scene became involved in a struggle and somehow, the suspect managed to get the gun of one of the troopers and used it to shoot two of them.

The shooting killed 24-year-old Trooper Tyler Edenhofer. Edenhofer, according to Col. Milstead, was in the last days of field training, and had been a trooper for 52 days.

According to Col. Milstead, King had no criminal history.

"He has a mental health history," said Col. Milstead. "Apparently, he was on medication for anxiety and depression."

King's mother, according to Col. Milstead, is cooperating.

"We've talked to his parents -- his mother, particularly -- who has been cooperative and thought he was in the backyard, on the trampoline," said Col. Milstead.
