Freddy Cannon, a singer and rock star behind the hit songs "Palisades Park" and "Tallahassee Lassie," has died. He was 89 years old.
Cannon died on July 17 at a California hospice facility after battling cancer. The entertainer’s music was popular in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Deadline reported.

According to Billboard, Cannon had 23 Hot 100 hit songs between 1959 and 1981, including "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" and "Let’s Put the Fun Back in Rock N Roll."

The backstory:
Freddy Cannon was born on Dec. 4, 1936, in Revere, Massachusetts and later moved to Philadelphia.
As his music career took off, Cannon would go on to work with some of the top musical performers of that era, including Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Chubby Checker, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Bo Diddley.
Cannon reportedly holds the record for the most appearances, with an estimate of over 100, on the popular music and dance television show "American Bandstand," hosted by Dick Clark.
Several movies over the years have featured Cannon’s hits, including "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and 2011’s "X-Men: First Class."
In 2011, Cannon wrote a biography with author Mark Bego entitled "Where the Action Is." Cannon is survived by his children Conny and Billy, his sister Mary Lou, son-in-law Jim, daughter-in-law Beth, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
