MCSO: Suspect in Thursday's deputy-involved shooting is dead

The male suspect in Thursday's deputy-involved shooting incident has died, according to officials with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

According to a statement released Friday afternoon, the suspect is identified as 42-year-old Pedro Rubio. The incident happened at around 12:03 p.m. at a shopping complex in the area of Dysart Road and McDowell. A deputy was on a lunch break and visiting a restaurant at the shopping complex when Rubio's sedan allegedly rear-ended the deputy's fully-marked patrol vehicle.

After the deputy left his patrol vehicle to check on Rubio, Rubio allegedly left his car, and approached the deputy with a knife. Rubio, according to the statement, refused to respond to orders, and began walking towards the deputy while still armed. The deputy fired his duty weapon, and at least one round struck Rubio.

The deputy, according to the statement, is a 12-year veteran of the MCSO. An investigation is ongoing.
