At least one person was reportedly killed after a medical transport helicopter crashed in Mississippi on Monday.

What we know:

Officials said a pilot and two hospital workers were on board.

The AirCare copter was not carrying any patients when it crashed in Madison County north of the capital of Jackson, according to a statement from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Television station WAPT reported that at least one person was killed. Authorities from the Federal Aviation Administration were en route, the station said.

What we don't know:

The cause of the crash has not been determined.

Big picture view:

The crash comes on the heels of several other high-profile aviation accidents since the start of the new year.

Seven people were killed when an air ambulance burst into flames after crashing onto a busy Philadelphia street in January. The plane plummeted into a residential and commercial area within a minute of taking off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport and erupted into a fireball.

Officials said the crash killed all six people aboard the Learjet 55 and a seventh person who was in a vehicle on the ground. At least two dozen others were injured, including a 10-year-old boy in a vehicle who was hit by debris while trying to protect his sister.
