Mother, boyfriend plead not guilty in child abuse case that 'shocks the soul'

A Mesa mother and her boyfriend, who were arrested in the horrific child abuse of her 3-year-old daughter, pleaded not guilty to charges.

Mayra Solis and Francisco Covarrubias pleaded not guilty to multiple charges on Tuesday. Prosecutors say Solis allowed the horrific child abuse of her daughter to happen by her boyfriend, Francisco Covarrubias.

Mesa police say Solis' daughter was found duct-taped inside a trash bag and hidden inside a closet. Solis has denied knowing that her daughter was being held in captivity by her boyfriend. She told police that she let Covarrubias babysit her daughter while she was at work.

Solis' daughter also showed signs of sexual abuse.

Solis has been indicted on charges of dangerous crimes against a child.

Covarrubias is facing several felony charges, including kidnapping, child abuse sexual conduct with a minor and not seeking help for the child's injuries.

Both are due back in court in March.
